In Italië is vrijdag 9 juli 2010 door diverse media gestaakt, uit protest tegen een wetsvoorstel die het hen verbiedt om te citeren uit materiaal dat via afluisteren is verkregen. De wet, die eind juli voor een definitief oordeel aan het parlement wordt voorgelegd, is volgens critici enkel bedoeld om premier Berlusconi en zijn zakenpartners te beschermen. Volgens officiële lezing is de wet bedoeld om trial by media te voorkomen. In 2003 werd in Italië ook al gestaakt uit protest tegen beleid van Berlusconi.

De Italiaanse premier heeft opnieuw een rel veroorzaakt door een opvallende opmerking te maken in Parijs na een OVSE-bijeenkomst. Op de vraag hoe het voelde aan de macht te zijn nu de markt het fiscale beleid bepaalt, citeerde hij de Italiaanse dictator Mussolini: ,,Hij zei: Het enige dat ik doen kan is mijn paard naar links of rechts sturen. Italy could extend TV rules to Web videos

ROME 4-02-2010 —Italy’s government is forging ahead with plans to extend television-broadcasting regulations to Web sites that host videos, marking one of the most sweeping attempts by a Western government to tighten control over the use of video on the Internet.

According to new regulations that have recently been proposed by the Italian government, YouTube would have to get a TV license to operate in Italy. Should Italy move ahead with this regulation, YouTube would have to follow the same rules and regulations as traditional broadcast channels. These new rules would eliminate the “safe harbor” rules that currently shield services like YouTube…

Als Silvio Berlusconi zijn zin krijgt, keurt Italië op 4 februari een wet goed die YouTube aan banden legt. Tenzij oppositiepartijen er alsnog in slagen de regering Berlusconi op andere gedachten te brengen, wordt deze wetgeving een absolute primeur voor een westerse democratie.

Het gaat om de meest ingrijpende maatregel door welke westerse regering dan ook die wordt goedgekeurd om greep te krijgen op het gebruik van video op het internet… (more…)

The political factor in Bastiaans humanistic art

It was interesting and revealing to find the political factor in Christiaan Bastiaans humanistic art at the Kröller-Müller Museum.

Club Mama Gemütlich is a hybrid combination of ‘field hospital, missionary post and nightclub’, in the no-man’s-land of a conflict zone.The installation by Bastiaans is based on the architectural layout of the Noh theatre and consists of sculptures, photographic works, video, a film, and works on paper.Bastiaans’ signature way-finding rhetoric revealed in the multi-layering of various media provides a humanistic salve: the stories and oral histories the artist has collected from his visits to conflict zones weave a tapestry of Divine Madness into a tour de force of inspiration, poetry and hope.The centerpiece of the exhibition is Bastiaans’ new 28 minutes film.The film, with the same title as the exhibition, consists of seven scenes. Each scene derives from a found war- photograph and takes place in an improvised shelter for a group of wounded soldiers.

Bij het kijken naar zijn werk, was het interessant en onthullend de politieke factor in zijn menselijke kunst te ontdekken tijdens het bezoek aan het Kröller-Müller Museum

Van 30 oktober 2009 tot en met 21 februari 2010 toont het Kröller-Müller Museum een tentoonstelling met werk van de Nederlandse kunstenaar Christiaan Bastiaans (Amsterdam, 1951) getiteld Club Mama Gemütlich. (more…)

Rebellen met een reden

Ik hoorde de oorlogsverslaggever Arnold Karskens op de radio. Hij verhaalde van zijn bewondering voor Nederlandse rebellen. Voor gewapende strijd. Over zijn boek: Rebellen met een reden. Ik spits mijn oren; ik noemde in La Lotta Continua. De politieke speelfilm en documentaire makers| The new generation filmmakers with a cause.

Aangekondigd werd Karskens als volgt: Het leven van huurlingen en rebellen spreekt tot ieders verbeelding. Het zou avontuurlijk en geheimzinnig zijn en wat is er mooier dan je idealen om te zetten in daden? Journalist Arnold Karskens ging op zoek naar de werkelijke verhalen van Nederlandse oorlogsvrijwilligers die hun hart volgden en deelnamen aan een vrijheidsstrijd. In Dit Is De Dag vertelt Karskens waarom wat deze en andere idealistische oorlogsvrijwilligers beweegt.

In zijn boek probeert Karskens de handelwijze van deze idealisten duidelijk te maken en te laten zien waarom zij hun hart volgden. Hij geeft aan in de radio uitzending, dat ook hij ooit uit idealisme dacht over het ter hand nemen van de wapens; in de jaren 60 en 70, de tijd dat de wereld nog maakbaar heette. Uit een oprechte woede over zoveel ongelijkheid en vuiligheid in de maatschappij. Ik realiseer me, dat ik die gedachte ook ooit had, alleen besloot ik de camera te gebruiken als wapen. Met als eerste gevolg mijn film Mama Calle. (1990-1991)

Het is voor de ontwikkeling van La Lotta Continua van belang, dat ik dat onderzoek. Die woede die je hebt bij onrecht en die maakt dat je daar ieder van op de hoogte wilt stellen. Die oprechte woede, die maakt dat de een een wapen kiest, de ander het journalistieke woord, de camera en weer een ander de schoonheid van de filmvertelling daarvoor gebruikt.

Hollywood used the Spanish Civil War as a subject in more than 50 films. The defeat of the Democratic Spain let an “open wound” in the heart of liberal actors, directors and screenwriters who used affection towards democratic Spain as a symbolic feature to define the romantic spirit of their characters.

This sympathy, however, was shaped according to American political tendencies of each period: from a liberal pro-republican position in the 40s, when Nazism was the enemy, to the upholding of Franco’s regime in the 50s, when the adversary was Communism.

This evolution is narrated through the personal story of Alvah Bessie, a Hollywood screenwriter who fought as a member of the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War. Alvah returned to Spain 30 years later, where he was required to write his only film after being blacklisted as one of the “Hollywood Ten”.

The documentary includes excerpts from movies such as “Casablanca”, “For Whom the Bell Tolls”, “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” and “The Way We Were”, among others. It also features comments by actress Susan Sarandon, screenwriters Arthur Laurents and Walter Bernstein and cinema historians Román Gubern and Patrick McGilligan.

“A war in Hollywood” is an original approach to one of the most controversial subjects of our times: the relationship between film industry and politics.
