‘On 21 March, Luis Sancho, from Spain, and Hawaii resident Walter Wagner filed a lawsuit in Hawaii’s US District Court against CERN and US contributors to the project demanding that they do not operate the LHC until they prove it is safe.’
James Gillies, a spokesman for CERN, told New Scientist that the lawsuit’s claims are “complete nonsense”. (more…)
Alan Walker from the University of Edinburgh organised a group to take Professor Emeritus Peter Higgs to CERN in Geneva from Friday April 4 to Monday April 7, to coincide with the CERN Open Days.
On Monday a press conference with Peter was organised. There was worldwide coverage as a result.

Drs. Liza Huijse, natuurkundige, schreef een artikel over de activiteiten van CERN op de website van de Volkskrant Bètacanon. Op deze website ontrolde onder leiding van Robbert Dijkgraaf in 2007 een lijst van 50 onderwerpen die iedere Nederlander van de wetenschap en techniek zou moeten weten. Het artikel geeft dan ook in begrijpelijke taal weer wat men in Genève uitspookt.
Liza werkt nu voor de Universiteit van Amsterdam aan promotieonderzoek naar de relatie tussen de eigenschappen van materie en de elementaire deeltjes waaruit die is opgebouwd.
Het Standaardmodel

Vlak buiten Genève, op de grens van Zwitserland en Frankrijk ligt ’s werelds grootste wetenschappelijke experiment. Bijna honderd meter onder de grond bevindt zich een zevenentwintig kilometer lange tunnel met daarin de Large Hadron Collider, de deeltjesversneller van CERN. Aan het experiment werken 10.000 mensen van 500 instituten uit 50 verschillende landen mee. (more…)
Before the doors of the experiments are closing, Cern organised an ‘Open Days’ weekend on April 5 and 6. The event was a big succes, 76,000 people visited Cern.
