IDFA tickets to Beyond the Game now available

Beyond the Game by filmmaker Jos de Putter is scheduled to have its world premiere at the largest documentary film festival in the world, the International Documentary Film festival Amsterdam, IDFA. IDFA will take place 20 - 30 November 2008 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Tickets are now available to three screenings at the event, read more below.

The premier of the film will take place Friday November 21 in Pathé de Munt at 18:00 CET, it is scheduled to last until 19:30. Standard tickets cost € 8,50, tickets with a Discount card or IDFA-coupon cost € 6,00. A second screening will take place Monday November 24 in Pathé Tuschinski at 12:00 CET lasting till 13:30. A third screening will take place at Thursday November 27 22:00 CET lasting till 23:30 once again in Pathé de Munt. Tickets to all screenings have the same prices.

Grubby wins WCG 2008

Protagonist of ‘Beyond the Game’ Grubby has moments ago (at time of writing) won the 2008 World Cyber Games which took place in Cologne, Germany. In the final match, which took 1 hour and 37 minutes, he faced the Korean Moon. They played three maps of WarCraft III with the winner needing to win two for victory (Moon won 1st, Grubby won 2nd and 3rd). There were many back-and-forths in the finals and Moon used a very risky style, the repeats will be watched for years to come. (more…)

Sky: Olympic Champion of WarCraft III

The most prestigious individual tournaments to win in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne are, and have always been, the World Cyber Games and the Electronic Sports World Cup (an argument can also be made for Blizzard events).

Twice a year the best players of many nation prepare to meet at a world cup at which the stakes are not just about the money that can be won, there are tournaments with similar or even substantially bigger prize purses, but to decide WhO can be crowned the world’s best player. (more…)

Every year numerous events take place featuring high level Warcraft III competition. The organizers of every one of them claim their event is the one that stands apart from all the others and determines the game’s real champion player (see this page for an overview of events in the year 2007). In reality only three really stand apart from the others in international competition. Pepsi sponsors World Elite

Chinese competitive gaming team World Elite, home of Xiaofeng Li (Sky), has a new main sponsor: Pepsi.

Traditional competitive gaming sponsors, usually hardware producers, have a direct relation with the world of computers. Pepsi entering the world of competitive gaming as the biggest sponsor behind one of the world’s most successful teams can be seen as a sign that the appeal of the sport is broadening.

Other World Elite sponsors include Razer, Kappa and Intel.

Chun Jung Hee drafted in Korean army

It has been made public that 22-year old professional gamer Chun Jung Hee (Sweet) [wikipedia biography] will soon start fulfilling a mandatory draft in his motherland of South-Korea and that the player will therefore end his Warcraft III career.

He is not the first professional Korean Warcraft III player to be drafted, a famous example is Dae Ho Kim (ShowTime) who was in his days one of the most recognized professional gamers in the world. All Korean players eventually have to face the draft, which has lead to the Korean air force opening up their own StarCraft division of which members (former professional gamers) represent the air force in professional competition.

BeT, MYM, SK & WE reach WC3L finals

About every six months since 2004 the best four Warcraft III teams are determined in a online competition known as the ‘Warcraft 3 Champions League’ and following this compete in a tournament somewhere in Europe (usually Germany) to determine which team is the strongest.

Sky, Moon & Sai to carry olympic torch

It has been reported that three professional Warcraft III players will serve as olympic torch carriers. Most notable of the three is world cyber games champion Xiaofeng Li (Sky), also carrying the torch will be his main rival in the asian region: Korean Jang Jae Ho (Moon) as well one of his strongest domestic rivals: Beijing resident Zhou Cheng Long (Sai).

WCG 2009 to take place in Chengdu, China

Chengdu, China has been announced as the location for the 2009 World Cyber Games. This marks the return of the prestigious tournament to Asia after the 2005 edition which took place in Suntec City, Singapore.

China has been growing fast the past few years as a major player in the world of international competitive gaming, following Germany (30,6%) and South Korea (21,0%) it is the country where the biggest share (18,5%) of prize-money Warcraft III competitions took place in 2007. The country is estimated to have a following for competitive gaming numbering in the millions.
