This week the documentary ‘Beyond the Game’ will be displayed twice at the Dutch Film Festival ( NFF). The film, directed by Jos de Putter, can be watched in Utrecht at the following dates:
- Thursday the 24th of september at 16.15 hour. Location: Movies 1.
- Friday the 25th of september at 22.15. Location: Louis Hartlooper complex.

‘Beyond the Game’, shown on television the 3rd of September by HUMAN media, follows professional Warcraftgamers. Lead player Grubby: “The movie reaches people who can be astonished by our world”.
Moviemaker Jos de Putter explored the world of gaming for his documentary ‘Beyond the Game’. The movie shows two professional Warcraft III-gamers in the running towards the world championship, were they compete in a final battle. The game ‘Warcraft III’ is a war-game between two players who are fighting a battle in a new world - cyberworld.
Leadplayer of the movie Manual Schenkhuizen, better known online as ‘Grubby’, answered some questions for Human.nl by e-mail. Manual is currently in the USA for a tournament and a short vacation. We translated the Dutch interview in English for all the international viewers of this website.
Director Jos de Putter describes ‘Warcraft III’, as a kind of chess playing game. How would you describe the game for people who are not familiar with it?
“’Warcraft III’ is a computer game en is part of ‘real time strategy’ gaming. You can play it by yourself, but you can also play against gamers from over the whole world in short intensive games. The world of ‘Warcraft III’ looks somewhat similar like the popular story from ‘Tolkien’s Middle-Earth’ (Lord of the Rings). (more…)
What moves the Warcraft generation? The documentary ‘Beyond the Game’ goes behind the scenes and into the minds of the world’s most famous Warcraft players. Yesterday the film by director Jos de Putter was broadcasted on Dutch television by HUMAN Media (Human.nl).

For my internship, that I just started at HUMAN, I watched the documentary ‘Beyond the Game’. After having seen this film, that was made by Jos de Putter in 2008, a lot of questions crossed my mind. To clear these out and because the documentary will be on Dutch television tonight (Thursday 3rd of September, Nederland 2, 22.50), I called René Glas (29). René works as a PhD student and lecturer at the department of Mediastudies at the University of Amsterdam.
A world that most of us cannot fully grasp, and yet on the other hand so normal and ordinary for some people: the world of gaming. Tonight the Dutch broadcaster HUMAN Media gives you a look in the lives of two players. Jos de Putter followed two young gamers of Warcraft III in the running towards the World Championship. Although the focus of his research lies on World of Warcraft, not to be mistaken with the game Warcraft III, René Glas is able to provide us with some more indebt information and his personal opinion on the mysterious, relatively unknown world of game players.
